Temporary traffic lights in Penryn have caused confusion for motorists who still believe they can drive through the centre of town.

Drivers have been waiting at the lights at the top of West Street - which are in place to provide access to and from Calder Close - before driving through when they turn green, only to have to turn around in the cul-de-sac and wait for the lights at the other end.

Penryn based photographer Philippa Starkey wrote on Twitter: "Chaos at West Street, Penryn. Diversion isn't clear it's for residents only. Traffic getting stuck."

Town clerk Michelle Davey said there were no traffic problems in the town centre, although traffic was lighter, and that there have been "a few complaints" from residents who claim that they were not told of the work by South West Water.

She added: "Any businesses who feel they have been adversely affected can claim compensation from South West Water, but they will need to provide financial evidence to support their claim.

"Ultimately, it is essential works that are being carried out so we do have to work around it as best we can and hope that the work will be completed in good time."

The works started this morning and are scheduled to continue until February 12, to be carried out in two stages: First from Calver Close to Market Street with access available towards West End, and then from West End to Calver Close with access via market street.

Diversions are in place via Commercial Road.
