Falmouth's Coastguard rescue team was at Swanpool on Sunday evening after a member of the public raised concerns that people were putting themselves at risk by wave watching during a period of high winds and waves.

The team split between two vehicles, with one headed to Swanpool and the other working back toward the beach from Pendennis point.

A spokesperson said: "Team members in water rescue gear investigated a tent that had seemingly been abandoned right on the edge of the breaking waves at Pendennis. No one was inside and it was locked. So we could do nothing further here.

"At Swanpool, team members assisted police with a road closure and maintained a safety cordon on all accesses to the beach.

"Further team members in water rescue gear were on standby should there have been any casualties to attend to."

The team also saw at least one member of the public putting themself at risk by using the bottom of the cliff path, where they could have been swept in under the railings.

Meanwhile, in Falmouth town centre, Market Strand flooded by Prince of Wales Pier on Sunday evening.

Six firefighters were called after a report of water rising through raised man hole covers and flooding the road. They used a hose reel jet to wash sewerage away from the properties on the street, while Cornwall Council highways temporarily closed the road.

The manager of the Prince of Wales pub, Jane Martin, said: "The pub slopes upwards, it came half way in.

"The drains blow, and raw sewage comes out of it."

She added: "It was my 10th anniversary of being in the pub yesterday, we were meant to be going on a boat trip. I think they thought they would bring the boat to us."

Because plenty of Mrs Martin's family and friends were in the pub, they were able to get everything cleaned up quickly and reopen for Monday morning.

And in St Mawes the cafe underneath the Ship and Castle hotel was flooded after the frontage of the seafront building was damaged by the storm.

A spokesperson for the hotel said: “The weather on Sunday caused some minor damage to The View Café which was closed at the time. The hotel is operating as usual and the café will reopen on Friday.”
