Panellists trying to shed some light on the debate about Britain’s membership of the European Union ahead of the June referendum will meet at a talk at Penryn Campus on Wednesday, April 20.

South west MEP Molly Scott Cato, Cornwall Councillor Dick Cole, and Cornwall-based businessman and former chair of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Member's Council John Harvey will be discussing the EU from their different perspectives and answering audience questions.

The event is being run by Cornwall Young Greens who said it will give people more information about the positive aspects of the EU for Cornwall while not ignoring some of the real problems and challenges, without the usual political bickering and meaningless fluff.

The event has been funded by Cornwall Young Greens and organised by their treasurer Imogen Kutz, together with the Falmouth University branch of the University and College Union (UCU).

Imogen said: "Like a lot of people, I’ve found both the Remain and Leave campaigns really alienating. There’s just too much Punch and Judy politics going on, and too much scaremongering. I wanted to know what was at stake in this referendum for me as a young person, and for Cornwall.

"So we’ve gathered together the speakers we felt best represented the different levels to consider: European, local government and local business. All of them are people with first-hand knowledge and experience of the impact of the EU locally. There won't be any party political posturing – just a friendly chat with people in the know."

Falmouth UCU Green representative Tom Scott said: "The outcome of this referendum is bound to impact on higher education in Cornwall, and on Cornwall’s environment. I hope that these will be among the issues that the panel addresses, as they’re too often left out of the equation."

The talk will be from 1pm to 2pm on Wednesday, April 20, in the Chapel Lecture Theatre at Penryn Campus.
