Falmouth coastguard is reminding people of the dangers of drinking around water after a woman was recovered from the water at Falmouth Yacht Haven on Sunday morning.

The Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and South West Ambulance Service were sent to the scene just before 1am on Sunday.

A coastguard spokesperson said: "On scene we'd found one - believed to be intoxicated - female had been recovered from the water by two passers by. It's unknown exactly how long she'd been in the water.

"She was treated by coastguard team members for the effects of the cold water.

"Ambulance paramedics were quickly on scene but the lady refused any further treatment and was released into the care of her partner."

The spokesperson recommended anyone who has fallen into water gets checked out by medical professionals, as there is "real risk," of delayed drowning, which can happen up to 72 hours after a near drowning incident.

They said: "This incident highlights the dangers of drinking around water."

The coastguard 'Don't Drink and Drown' campaign states that alcohol:lowers inhibitions, leading to impaired judgement; limits muscle ability making simple movements much harder; slows down your reactions; and numbs the senses, particularly sight, sound and touch, making swimming very difficult.
