One of the founder members of Constantine Women's Institute was at the WI Hall on Wednesday to cut the cake for the group's 65th birthday.

Beaujolois Cavendish, who also arranged the loan which allowed the group to buy the hall and rebuild it in the 1950s, joined the current president Angela Stokes in starting the celebrations, before members and guests sat down to enjoy cream teas and a glass of bubbly.

Neil Cavendish, a member of Constantine Parish Council, said a few words to the group, thanking them "for all their community work that they have done in the parish over the last 65 years."

He said: "There are many things they have gotten on with, many things they have suggested, many things they have come along and prodded the parish council... so we have woken up and done what they asked."

Angela said: "We opened the hall at 10 this morning and we invited the members from the village to come along and have a cup of coffee and look at the display. What we have tried to do is go through from when the WI was started.

"The WI was formed with about six or seven members, and two or three of them are still with us today."
