An adventure charity which helps disadvantaged and disabled children and adults was visited by Penryn mayor Mark Snowdon this week to receive a £500 cheque.

The team from BF Adventure, which operates from a quarry at Halvasso near Longdowns, was delighted to have a visit from the mayor and receive the cheque, which was donated by Penryn Town Council towards buying new tents.

Buying new tents means the centre will be able to welcome local young people and groups with higher support needs, to enjoy an outdoor camping experience on the beautiful 60 acre site.

Adrian Richards, BF Adventure chief executive, said: "We fully appreciate the contribution towards the work we do, the grant will make a significant difference to the quality of facilities and the experience we can offer to the hundreds of Cornish young people (many of whom reside within the Penryn area) of whom a large number face severe neglect and multiple disadvantage that will stay with us this coming summer.

"It is great to have the opportunity to thank the mayor personally and show him where the grant will be invested."

BF Adventure supports young people that are not in education or employment, at risk of expulsion or have higher support needs. Many of them receive support and guidance by the staff who introduce young people to new experiences and the outdoors, which often leads to overnight stays.

Hundreds of young people from Cornwall, including many from the Penryn area, can now take advantage of the new facilities provided by Penryn Town Council.

A council spokesperson said: "The town council has the greatest respect for the work that BF Adventure does at the centre and we are pleased we could support the charity again this year."
