A Falmouth Town footballer was joined by team-mates and other friends in a marathon 72-hole golf fundraiser recently in aid of two cancer charities.

Glen Squires literally covered a marathon distance during the day long event, covering around 40 kilometres of fairway with his clubs to raise money for the Mermaid and Sunrise Centres in Truro, which helped save his wife Sarah after she was diagnosed with cancer just over a year ago.

Between 5,20am and 9.30pm, Glen and Falmouth team mates Ed Timmons and Tom Whipp, along with friends Sam Hunter, Rob Handley and Josh Hancock, braved sun and rain, and managed to collect over £3,000 between them.

Glen said: "Just before our first anniversary my wife Sarah was diagnosed with cancer.

"We were inside our first year of marriage with two young children and at just 30 years old it came as a massive shock. When you are on the receiving end of that kind of news your world collapses and it's difficult to describe the overwhelming fear and worry that you feel.

"We were so truly grateful to the staff and care that you get at the two centres so I said to Sarah whilst she was going through it that I would do something when she came out the other side.

"I really wanted to raise some money so that when someone else young with a young family is hit with the news we were then the centres will be there to support them, with great staff and great facilities like they did with us.

Glen chose June 26 for the event, as it was exactly a year after Sarah had been diagnosed - two weeks before their wedding anniversary - and was also a fortnight after she finished her treatment.

He was thankful that the Carlyon Bay Golf Club agreed to let the players use the course for the day, as it was the place where the couple had held their reception and he wanted to invite friends and family along to celebrate the day with the couple and the golfers.

Glen felt the day went "really well" despite a 4am start for some. Following two rounds of golf, the players joined their supporters for lunch and a drink, before heading back out.

He said: "This is where the rain began. We headed back out in rain then for the next three hour round, which brought us back in about 5.pm45 and then after a change of clothes and socks we headed out for the final round where things dried up for the last back nine."

He added: "Also thanks must go to these guys who put a lot of work into raising and collecting monies as well as taking he time and effort on the day."
