Sun shone one paddle blades and fiery figureheads as dragon boat racing returned to Falmouth Week for another year.

Ten crews turned out for the event, mixing veterans and debutants, with newcomers from Marnick Builders and Mylor Yacht Harbour posting the day's two fastest times in the heats, before stalwart team The Dirty Oars - third last year - snatched away victory in the final.

Organiser Mike Lanyon said: "The event went very well indeed, we had some fantastic teams there.

"We had a couple of new teams turn up this year.

"It's always been a community event in Falmouth, since 1994, and the important side is the community side."

He added: "We have got two years to go until our 25th anniversary, and I'm proud to say it's the longest running event of its kind in the UK."

He said that following a slightly smaller turnout this year, the organisers intend to build the event back up next year before having a really big event for the 25th anniversary, with hopes of a river race to Truro and "then hopefully back."
