The founder of Penryn - or someone looking a lot like him - will make his triumphant arrival at Exchequer Quay on Saturday as he returns to open the town's Fair Day.

Bishop Simon of Apulia will disembark at the quay at 12.15pm on Saturday, as fair day becomes part of this year's Penryn 800 celebrations, marking eight centuries since the real life Simon founded the town in his capacity as Bishop of Exeter.

After his arrival, there will be a Prayer Book Rebellion service on Exchequer Quay at 12.30 before those assembled parade up through the town for the bishop to officially open the fair at 1pm.

There will be plenty on offer at the fair itself, with amusements including a giant slide at the top of town, and a bouncy castle, bucking bronco and face painting and more in the Memorial Garden, along with exotic animals at 1pm and 3pm and Punch and Judy at 2pm and 4pm.

There will be music outside the Seven Stars all day, from country band Preachin' Country and community choir the Suitcase Singers, as well as at Fish Cross from Falmouth Soul Sensation and the Suitcase Singers, while dancing can be seen in front of the town council offices from Co Act and Flanagan's School of Irish Dance.

Broad Street will host a vintage car show, while market stalls will be found along Higher Market Street, and at 1.20pm a fun run will set off from the town centre on behalf of charity Tanya's Courage Trust.

In the Methodist Chapel there will be a craft exhibition, with a pigeon release at 1.15pm in commemoration of World War One, and performances from Lanner District Band, and in the Temperance Hall there will be music, tea and cakes throughout the day.

Penryn Museum will be open from 12 noon to 4pm with a World War One exhibition, while the University of Exeter will be holding a Festival of Discovery in the Town Hall from 12.30pm, with the chance to pan for gold, build an earthquake resistant structure with spaghetti or take a core sample through a landscape of yummy cake.

The festival will also be showing historic pictures of Penryn, and giving visitors the opportunity to make a 'commonplace book', dissect owl pellets, and meet live bees.

Penryn Fair Day will be followed on Sunday witha 'Summer Music for a Summer Evening concert.

Starting at 7pm in the Methodist Chapel, the concert will feature the Lemonaires, soloist Anthony Gilbert, Class Brass, Mabe Ladies Choir and the town mayor, and will cost £5 for entry.
