The villagers of Stithians will no-longer have to head to Ponsanooth or use a part-time outreach for their Post Office services after the opening of a new store this month.

The village's Post Office service ended in July last year when the previous postmaster resigned, and although the company had been running a part-time service from the village hall since October, it quickly became clear how much the facility was missed.

At the beginning of this year talks took place with Ponsaonooth postmistress Michelle Firminger and Stithians Parish Council to convert the village's old toilet block - which closed in March - into a full time Post Office.

Work commenced, and despite a few hiccups the refurbished block was ready to open for its new use at the start of September.

Parish councillor Phil Blease cut the ribbon to open the new premises, which will also include a shop and off-licence, selling everyday provisions and local produce, to help it remain financially viable.

Anita Jennings, the new shop manager, said: "This project has mainly been reliant on many volunteers to which we are truly grateful to have made this happen and just goes to show the community's involvement at getting it up running is seen as a much needed cause."
