Anyone with stories or family memories of topsail schooners which were built or sailed from the Falmouth and Truro area is invited to an event in Devoran next month.

The event at Devoran Village Hall is the start of a new community project, Topsail Ahoy, which is gathering community memories and mementoes of the days when schooners from Cornwall crossed the world, trading with north Africa, the Americas, the Baltic, and beyond.

It is led by the community interest company Storylines, together with the Rhoda Mary Project, which aims to retrieve the remains of the schooner Rhoda Mary and return them to Point near Devoran where she was built, before restoring the ship to her original state.

The Topsail Ahoy project is looking for stories about: shipbuilding, particularly merchant schooners, in local boatyards; the location of boatyards or individual boats; family members who went to sea; and anyone who had shares in a boat.

Sarah Chapman, from Storylines, said: "Although the times of merchant schooners are not within living memory, there will be a legacy of stories that have been passed down through the generations. We really hope that people come and share these with us so that we can preserve the memory of theses iconic vessels and the people who were associated with them."

The informal gathering will take place at Devoran Village Hall on Sunday, October 16, from 2pm to 5pm.
