The mizzle couldn't dampen the celebratory mood at Boscawen Fields in Falmouth on Friday, as local residents enjoyed the fruits of two years' hard work and investment.

The Boscawen Fields Action Group held an afternoon tea party with representatives from Cormac, Cornwall Council and Falmouth Town Council, where they proudly showed off the latest additions to the fields.

Also invited were representatives from Tesco, which has provided £10,000 towards the works from its Bags of Help scheme, aimed at redistributing the cash it has collected from the 5p plastic bag levy.

Tony Hallam, BFAG chairman, said at the event: "We're delighted, in spite of the bad weather, that so many people turned up: the mayor, the councillors, members of the group, and Tesco as well.

They're encouraging us to apply for some more funding from them.

"Cormac have done an excellent job as a very competitive price, and the town council has been very accommodating."

Boscawen Fields Action Group (BFAG) has been running since autumn 2014, and in that time has cleared up the fields: removing weeds, clearing up litter, and planting hundreds of bulbs. With the help of grant funding, and with workers from Cormac, the group recently installed a set of steps into the field, repaired and rebuilt 10 metres of the fields' original stone wall and filled the space above with topsoil and grass seed, installed hardwearing grasscrete paths at busy intersections and placed two new picnic benches in the dog free area of the fields.

Falmouth's mayor, Grenville Chappell, said: "It's great to see the fields being used. They're for public use and they're well used, and long should it stay that way."

Janice Phillips, the community enabler for Groundworks, Tesco's partner managing the Bags of Help scheme, congratulated the group on their work, and said the company was looking for more applications for funding.

She said: "We are particularly looking for applications from Falmouth, the Lizard and Helston: Community groups doing any kind of project, outdoors or indoors."
