Children and teachers from St Francis School dressed up in period costume to learn about ancient Rome.

The day was devised to help the children learn through interaction, rather than through study.

By making shields, learning Latin and practising Roman battle formations, the children got a real hands-on learning experience.

This day of activity ties into the curriculum, and teachers believe it gives the children a nice change from traditional learning techniques.

Gwil Jones, teacher of Class G, said: "This is one of our themes this year and today is aimed at giving the children an experience of Roman history.

"We're making shields and mosaics today, then we're going to be doing some battle formations later.

"To be able to come in dressed as a Roman lets them know what it was like and enables them to learn in a different way. It brings it to life a bit more.

"We do a lot of it as it's a fun way for them to learn.

"They work so hard with maths and literacy so its nice to do things like this at the end of term. It's learning without realising really."
