The Flushing Summer Show returned to the Village Club for the third year in a row, with considerable support from residents even more entrants than the previous year.

The Tregaskes family did well, with Milly Tregaskes gaining the Best Child award for her aubergine hedgehog and her sister Lottie growing the tallest sunflower at nine feet six inches.

One of the organisers, Pat Styles, described the sunflower competition entries as "looking like triffids trying to get out of the snooker room window."

The Best Adult award went to Ali Ward for her floral arrangement with her interpretation of life in Flushing, a blue and white creation with blazing yellow sun, while the best in show award went to Phillip Chapman for his occasional outside table, complete with wine glasses and made from a cable drum.

Pat added: "Just perfect for balmy evenings on the patio, just a shame he couldn’t have created a few more of those to go with the table." The overall points total, which this year earned the recipient the new award of an engraved glass trophy, was won by Claire Derrick, whose son Morven also gained the most points in the under five section.

Other children’s awards went to Archie Coles, Lilia Weller-Vyse and Madeline Riley-Smith. The Craft Club produced a table of the creations made at their meetings throughout the year and included works of marbling, decoupage, silk painting, plaster of Paris and book binding, all crafts clearly enjoyed by their members.

The Craft Club also set tables up in the courtyard enabling visitors to the show and prospective club members to have a go at decoupage and hand and finger painting.
