A memorial service was held at Penryn Campus where a bench was unveiled for Caitlin Cook, who took her own life in April 2017.

The commemorative bench has a distinctive design, which represents half of a camera lens in memory of the TV and production student's love of cinematography.

Caitlin's dad John Cook said: "I hope it will give people some idea that a student such as Caitlin could be helped."

He stressed the importance of communication: "Parents, talk to your children."

The U-shaped design of the bench encourages people to face each other and chat, and sitting in the middle of the school of film and television, will provide a social hub for future generations of students.

Tony Sanders, managing director of FX plus, which provides services to students, said that the memorial "was a really special moment ... a chance for the family to see the love from students."

He encouraged students to make the most of the university's support service if they felt they needed help, and to take action if a friend starts becoming more isolated and reclusive.

Christopher Morris, director of the school of film and tv, said that Caitlin was remembered as someone who social life revolved around.

He spoke about how staff at the university were affected by her passing, saying: "You can't underestimate the closeness of the students and staff who work here."

The university provides a range of services through FX plus including counselling and mental health support, which can be accessed by sending an email to studentservices@fxplus.ac.uk or phoning 01326 370460.
