Falmouth town centre came alive with the sound of African rhythms last Friday thanks to Falmouth Art Gallery’s “Penrhythm Party.”
The gallery showcased the best of African and Cornish art and music with a vibrant new exhibition and an African-inspired performance and drumming workshop from the group Penrhythm, who are based at Troubadour Studios on Falmouth Wharf.
Visitors and families filled the gallery with African beats as they joined the samba band.
They then demonstrated their talents by accompanying the band for a special performance of drumming on The Moor. The workshop was the culmination of a week of special “Holiday Hulabaloo” activities at the gallery. Families enjoyed making musical instruments, badges and costumes in preparation for the drumming performance.
The workshop was staged to accompany the gallery’s new Africa Calling exhibition. Mounted in association with the October Gallery, London and University College Falmouth, the exhibition celebrates the links between Cornwall and Africa and can be viewed until September 13.
