Award for Falmouth tall ships stalwart

Falmouth Harbour Commissioners have rewarded the work of John Hick, chairman of the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta Organising Committee in Falmouth, by presenting him with the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Falmouth Harbour. The award is presented annually for people who have contributed significantly to the harbour over the course of the year.

Mr Hick received the award for his contribution to the success of the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta which took place in Falmouth during September.

In order to win the award nominees are first put forward by the Fal Estuary Marine Safety Committee Consultative Committee, and the final winner is then decided by the FHC Board. This year it was a unanimous vote by both the board and the consultative committee for Mr Hick.

Collecting his award Mr Hick said he was delighted to receive the accolade. “This is just wonderful.” he said. “I worked extremely hard to make sure that the Tall Ships Regatta was a good as it could be and I’m honoured that my efforts have been recognised in this way.

“I have to also pay tribute to all those who helped make the event what it was. I was backed and supported by a marvellous tourism team at Carrick district council and the most cooperative support from A&P Falmouth, Port Pendennis Marina, Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, Cornwall Marine Network and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.

“Receiving this award is extremely special. Thank you.”

It is estimated that the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta attracted more than 66,000 people to Falmouth and reinforced Falmouth’s position as a world class maritime event location.

David Ellis, chairman of Falmouth Harbour Commissioners presented the award to Mr Hick.

“John Hick really went above and beyond the call of duty in his role. He was the driving force behind the event and its subsequent success. Falmouth should be extremely proud of what John achieved for the town, we certainly are. We couldn’t have hoped for a more worthy winner of this award.”
