Two Penryn vets are heading out to Sri Lanka later this month to sterilise some of the ever-increasing population of stray cats and dogs.
Ella Stekly and Matt Thomas are two of four vets heading out to the sub-continent for animal charity Spay Sisters on July 27.
Ella, who owns Amos and Penny, helped start Spay Sisters in 2006. She said that they did not start the charity because they thought they could prevent unnecessary deaths, but because they could make a small effort to save cat and dog lives, not just by sterilising the animals themselves but also teaching the local vets how to do the operations.
She said: “Sterilising is not a cull but leads to a healthier existence by the control of reproduction. Post operation the animals become calmer, fight less, get fewer diseases, need fewer calories and obviously don’t produce vast quantities of kittens and puppies each year.
“A single cat or dog can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in five years, therefore a sterilised animal population becomes more stable and less transient.”
Spay Sisters have been on similar trips before, but this will be the first trip for Matt.
He said: “It is well known that the Sri Lankan people have had a rough time but the animals have also suffered.”
