Falmouth fire brigade take on residents in pasty-off

Talented pasty makers in Falmouth’s Beacon Partnership area have been presented with a challenge.

On Tuesday a group, led by June Chappel from the partnership, will take on members of Falmouth fire brigade in a at the resource centre in Old Hill to see who can make the best pasty.

Mrs Chappel said that she was challenged by Tim Cocks, manager of the fire brigade’s Phoenix Project and Community Values Project, which works with people in areas around Cornwall.

“We work closely with the fire brigade and we were talking about the what we do on the estate when Tim said that they make great pasties at the station.

“I said to them, get on you can’t make a proper Cornish pasty, so now we are going to decide once and for all who makes the best.”

When asked how many people she had making pasties, Mrs Chappel added: “If I told you I would have to shoot you.”

Judging the competition will be chief fire officer Des Tidbury and portfolio holder Lance Kennedy as well as one mor ejudge who is yet to be decided.

Tim Cocks said that there was another message behind the competition as well and the fire brigade will talk about fire safety in the kitchen before the contest starts.

“Seventy per cent of house fires started in the kitchen so it’s a way to engage people that are using their kitchens.

“This will help start our community values initiative in this area where we work with the police and the residents on courses.”
