An anonymous Falmouth artist has claimed ownership of the mysterious “Russian sign” that was reported in the Packet last week.

The sign, which was roughly translated as: "Sorry, freedom of speech has to be cancelled today due to ignorance,” appeared in Church Street two weeks ago, much to the bemusement of passersby.

It was one of a pair of signs. The other, in English, disappeared from outside the Grapes Inn on its first night according to its creator, who got in touch with us last week to explain the motivation behind the artworks.

Anonymous street artist “BluePear,” whose “tag” or signature appeared at the bottom of the Russian sign, confirmed that the sign had nothing to do with the university or the church and was only placed outside the church of King Charles the Martyr because it was “the best place to get it noticed.”

“There are two things I have noticed around Falmouth and Cornwall,” the artist said, “first, a lack of street art and second, a lot of street signs are dumped by companies and the council - In fact the ‘Russian’ project sign was sat on a roadside for almost three months before I picked it up.

“I got thinking, and then it hit me, if the council can't be bothered to clean them up, then I will give them back to the community in a way that will brighten their day and hopefully get a laugh or two.”

BluePear said Packet readers might remember the “Alien Abduction Zone” sign placed outside the Card Factory last year.

The artist also promised that more of these unique artworks would grace Falmouth’s streets in the future.

It it still not known, at the time of publication, what - if any - motivation the artist had in writing the sign in Cyrillic or putting it in place on a specific date.

BluePear is not forthcoming with the answers - the e-mail account he, or she, used to contact the Packet would now appear to be dead.

This mystery remains, only part-way solved.
