Following their successful launch last month, the team at the newly refurbished Pennycomequick has been quick to praise the support from local people and businesses for the new venture on The Moor.

While the management trio of James Luck, Steve Boot and Mark White have over 35 years’ experience in the South West pub and restaurant business between them, this was their first foray into Falmouth and as James explained, they have been bowled over by the welcome they have received.

“There’s just such a great vibe about the town and we felt that the very first time we came to look at the pub while it was being restored," he said. "Some places can be a bit dog eat dog when it comes to business, but we’ve had nothing but goodwill and positive support from the local community since we arrived, it’s truly amazing and we want to thank everyone for making us feel so at home.”

With sustainability very much at the heart of the operation, the Pennycomequick team has already embraced the Final Straw campaign, switching to paper straw use as part of a wider commitment to reducing waste to landfill and food miles, while sustainably sourced fuel in the wood burner will provide a proper traditional pub welcome in the cold winter months.

Not content with a simple refurb, the St Austell Brewery owned local recently underwent a substantial renovation and restoration program, including the name change linking the pub back to the earliest days of the town before the town charter was granted to the first owners of the pub, the Killigrew family, back in 1661.

Involved in the works from the outset, head chef Steve Boot said: “We knew what we wanted to do with the old place but until it’s finished and open, you can’t fully predict how people will react to it, so to have such a positive response from everyone about the look and feel and the name change is amazing and makes all the waiting to get started worthwhile.”

James added: “You can’t fake a proper pub atmosphere because it’s always about the people who come in and their interactions with each other. We’re already getting such a great mix in the pub, from students up to 80-year-olds and everyone in between and that is making the Pennycomequick feel really special already."
