Children's parliament discuss safer routes to school

9:50am Thursday 8th May 2008

CHILDREN at Marlborough School invited Terrye Teverson, Liberal Democrat candidate in Truro and Falmouth, to attend their Children's Parliament to discuss a variety of topics.

The children, aged between 9 and 11, discuss items and to come up with their ideas and views. There are various special interest groups which include topics such as healthy eating, environment, learning, social and charities.

Terrye said, "I was delighted to come along when they were discussing the Swanpool and safe routes to school project. The children have worked hard on a cycle scheme to link all the schools in Falmouth. This is very innovative. Our children are very aware of the environment and it's great to think that some of the ideas here today could be implemented for their future."

Head teacher Richard Gambier, a keen cyclist himself, commented: "We asked Terrye to come along because we feel that more could be done to look at the future for Swanpool. Our school is included in the primary school for sustainable travel initiative with an aim to reclaim safe routes to and from school for children. That's why I am keen to promote a Falmouth-wide integrated cycle network."

Terrye was also joined by parent governor Viv Minton who is looking after the travel group team in the future.

Terrye Teverson concluded, "I think that the highway design group could have looked a more sustainable way of calming traffic at Swanpool. The work carried out needs to be reviewed especially where there is now a 30 mile and hour back road around Swanpool and yet the main road is 20 mph. This means people are just switching and using the other road which is clearly not suitable."

"I will be asking Andy Hoskin at the Highway Design Group at Scorrier to revisit this scheme in the light of a cycle network to allow our children to get to school safely."
