ALL SAINTS’ PARISH CHURCH: The Sung Mass for the Patronal Festival was well attended, presided over by Father Stephen Drakeley, priest-in-charge. Fr Stephen was also preacher for the day, while the Intercessor was Father Stewart Turner, curate.
The service began with the singing of the Processional Hymn The Church’s One Foundation, following which the priest greeted the congregation.
Fr Stewart then led the introductory sentences which begin with the words “Rejoice, people of God, praise the Lord, let us keep the feat in honour of all God’s Saints.” Prayers of Penitence then preceded the singing of the Kyrie Elision and Gloria in Excelsis. Barbara Martin then read both the lessons. The first from the Book of Revelation, chapter 7 v 9-17, describes the scene where multitudes stood before the throne dressed in robes of white. Robes washed and made white in the blood of the lamb – Jesus.
The second from John, chapter 3 v 1-3. The Apostle reminds his readers of the “love of the father that should be called children of God.” The beatitudes part of the sermon on the Mount, Matthew chapter 5 v 1-12, was proclaimed by Fr Stewart as the gospel message. Fr Stephen mystified the congregation by quoting statistics concerning Guy Fawkes. As he began his address, the connection became evident when he produced and list a “sparkler” firework and compared it to the light given off by a saint – a bright light. He then went on to emanating some of a saints virtues, one of which was closeness to God. Two things they were not he added “boring” and always “meek and mild.”
Celebrating at the Eucharist he was attended by chalice bearers, Fr Stewart and Helen Bancroft. Servers for the Mass were David Fittock and Claire Eason-Bassett, organist Roger King, sidespersons Sheila Reeves and Jane MacLennan.
The Mass ended with the singing of the hymn For all the saints who from their labour rest.
The annual All Saints Tide Luch for this year was then held at Falmouth Beach Hotel.
The result of the recent Gift Day was announced. Writing in the All Saints’ bulleting, Fr Stephen stated “finance as a measure is not the most appropriate measure of well-being, but the sum of £1766 says much to the feeling you have towards All Saints’, our centre of spiritual opportunity.
