ALL SAINTS’ PARISH CHURCH: President of the Sung Parish Mass for Sunday, Second before Advent, was Father Stewart Turner, curate. The preacher and intercessor was Father Stephen Drakeley, priest-in-charge.
The Mass began with the processional hymn God is working his purpose out. Fr Stewart then greeted the congregation before leading the Prayers of Penitence and Contrition.
The singing of the Kyrie and Gloria in Excelsis preceded the reading of the first lesson by Derek Smith. This was taken from the Book of Zephaniah; a book not often studied in church, chapter 1 v 7 and 12-18. This paints a horrific picture of the end of the world. The fire of the Lord’s wrath consuming the world earth.
Paul Jenkins then read the second lesson; the first letter of Paul to the Thessalonians, chapter 5 v 1-11. The Apostle counsels his readers on the need to remain vigilant, since we cannot predict the coming of the Lord further. His words of hope, unlike the words of Zephaniah: “For God has destined us, not for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Fr Stephen in his address explored the differing viewpoints, not before, however, pointing out the similarities existing at the time of Zephaniah and today.
The Gospel proclaimed was Matthew chapter 25 v 14-30. Jesus is again teaching through parable, the story being of servants entrusted with talents and what they made of their opportunities.
Fr Stewart celebrated at the Eucharist. The chalice attendants were Barbara Jenkins and Jane MacLennan. The server for the Mass was Anthea Bancroft and sidespersons were Derek Smith and Paul Jenkins. The organist was Roger King.
The worship ended with the hymn All my hope on God is founded.
In the evening the body of Father Ken Hill, retired priest, a worshipper at All Saints’ was received into church in preparation for a Requiem Mass and Commendation on Monday.
Services on Sunday: 8am Low Mass; 10am Sung Mass for Sunday “Christ the King”; Wednesday 11am Low Mass.
