A large number of members met at the Green Lawns Hotel on February 21 for lunch, celebrating the 91st birthday of Falmouth WI.
The sun shone, food and service was excellent and conversation was lively, making a most enjoyable celebration. President, Grace Bradford proposed the toasts to the National and County Federations, Ros Farley to sick members and Heather Thomas to absent friends. Grace thanked the hotel for an excellent lunch.
This week’s speaker was Eileen Carter whose subject was St Piran now and dreckly. She told the story of Piran’s arrival from Ireland and the establishment of the church and oratory, well known to most members but not the “emmetts” among them.
The work of the St Piran Trust was explained, their object being to protect and enhance sites associated with the saint. This was extremely important for Cornish history and heritage. Photographs were shown, some very old, of the work on the sites through the years, which gave rise to questions and animated discussion among members.
Hilda Barnett thanked Eileen for a fascinating insight into the story. The competition was won by Miriam Osborne with runners up Margaret Stevens and Betty Ross.
The president spoke of the loss of Peter Gilson, a good friend to the WI, and members’ thoughts were with Thelma and her family.
