The University of the Third Age (U3A) Carrick

Ronald Perry talked to the meeting in Truro Town Hall on June 23 about Silvanus Trevail, the architect who built so much in Cornwall during Victorian times.

He was responsible for such well-known buildings as the Truro Library and the Headland and Atlantic hotels at Newquay. It was a fascinating account of a very remarkable architect, who also played an important role in local politics. The lecture was supported by an excellent Powerpoint presentation, with pictures of the man himself and many of the schools and hotels that he had designed. Ann Perry, who prepared the presentation, said that she had learnt how to put the programme together by attending the U3A computer course and getting tuition from Angela Beale and Richard Strafford.

David Chapman, the well known locally based wildlife photographer and author made a welcome return when he spoke to the Perranwell meeting on July 1. In a gripping and illuminating journey, he took members around several key conservation sites in Cornwall, explaining and illustrating the landscape and the wildlife at each. John Harris gave the vote of thanks and thanked him for taking the Photographic Group recently on a photo-shoot at the Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserve at Kennal Vale.

Forthcoming events: By request, U3A will be running Table Tennis, Petanque and possibly Croquet at the Richard Lander School fete called "Summer Fun in the Sun" on the afternoon of Friday June 26. The school provides accommodation for a number of the U3A groups, and we are very much indebted to the school for this help.
