Parish of Penwerris, Falmouth

Sunday was the Second Sunday before Lent and being the first Sunday of the month was the family eucharist at Penwerris.

Father Mark Mesley celebrated the parish mass. Mr D G Barnicoat and Mr J B Bray were the servers and Brenda Pike the organist.

The introit hymn was “Thou whose almighty word” and after the collect for the day Anne Mesley read the Old Testament lesson from Genesis chapter 2 v 4b-9, 15-25. Father Beverley read the responsorial Psalm 65 “You visit the earth and water it.”

Being the family eucharist there was only one reading and Fr Mark proclaimed the Gospel, Luke chapter 8 v 22-25 and in his sermon quoted from the collect, “You have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image.”

This week is also National Week of Marriage and as the banns were called for a marriage later this year at Penwerris, Fr Mark reflected on what is called by the sacrament of holy matrimony.

The eucharist followed with the offertory hymn “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty the King of Creation” and “For the fruits of His creation” was sung during communion.

Fr Mark gave the notices for the week: Wednesday, 10am, weekday mass at the Church of the Holy Spirit; 2.30pm the prayer group meets at 11 Trevethan Court. Friday, 9.30am, weekday mass at St Michael’s Church. Saturday, 9.30am, morning prayer in choir stalls of St Michael’s Church. Sunday, 10am, concelebrated parish mass at St Michael’s; 5pm, the First Lent Lecture on 2 Corinthians.

The recessional hymn was “Let us with a gladsome mind” and coffee was served after the service.

The coffee morning money was donated to the Bishop of Ebbsfleet Mission Fund for the Youth Pilgrimage at Brean.
