Sunday, January 31 was Education Sunday. The children from St Mary’s School took a reading role in the morning mass, having prepared the scripture readings and the intercessory prayers. Evening prayer was held early so that parishioners could attend the United Service, arranged by Falmouth Churches Together at St Budock Church.
Congratulations go from the parish to George and Verna Stanforth, who celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and to Verna for her 90th birthday. Prayers were asked for Brother William Akkala, the student in India studying for ordination, who is currently sponsored by St Mary’s parish. There was an appeal for help for Father Steven Bulambo, the priest in Malawi who was previously sponsored by St Mary’s. He was in urgent need for help for transport around his extremely wide spaced African parishes, where exceptionally heavy rain has made travel even more difficult than usual. Generous donations made it possible to send him £1000. Parishioners also gave help with the collection for ShelterBox, which was continued all the week outside the Methodist Church on the Moor and raised over £7000.
Parish groups continued their regular activities. Prayers were said for Godfrey Hooper who died last week and for Bridget Thomas who died last weekend.
Tuesday, February 2 is the traditional date for Candlemas, the commemoration of the baby Jesus’ presentation in the temple in Jerusalem. Before the morning service there was a procession down the church, everyone carrying candles a reminder of the words of the aged Simeon that Jesus was “a light to lighten the Gentiles.”
On Sunday the reading from the prophet Isaiah described his vision of God’s glory in the temple and how he responded to God’s call by saying: “Here am I, send me.” From St Luke’s gospel the reading told of Jesus’ call to Simon Peter and his brother Andrew and James and John the sons of Zebedee and they left all to follow him. Congratulations and a welcome from the parish to Bridget Quirke, who has been received into full communion with the church. At the end of mass, baby Lennon Martin Giblin was brought up by his parents for a special blessing in preparation for his baptism.
