Falmouth Bay Resident's Association

Approximately 70 members were welcomed to the AGM on Sunday, January 31.

Chairman, Dr Allan Lester, thanked the Green Lawns Hotel for hosting the event and welcomed guests PC Michelle Thompson, PCSO Scott Laity and Councillor Alan Jewell. Best wishes were sent to Falmouth Police Inspector John Trott, who was making a good recovery from a very serious road cycling accident. Thanks were expressed to Phil Boddy, who served on the association committee in the previous year before relocating to Hampshire.

The chairman reported on a successful year, which saw a significant increase in membership and funds. The association held its first garden party at Princess Pavilion and also established a Community Computer Club in partnership with Falmouth School and Elemental UK. The association has also campaigned on various planning applications and other community issues. It has also established a “Beachwatch” scheme in partnership with the police and Cornwall Council to monitor and report on activities in and around the sea front.

The treasurer and membership secretary, Tim Walsh, reported that membership had grown over the past year from 85 residences to 144 and that over the same period association funds had risen from £525 to a little over £1000.

In accordance with the constitution, all officers stood down from their positions and offered themselves for re-election – Allan Lester, chairman; Joan Barnett, vice chairman, Tim Walsh, treasurer and David Yelland, secretary. All were re-elected unopposed. The officers and other committee members will be joined on the 2010 committee by two new members – Heather Rowley of Gyllyngvase Road and Jane Boriosi of Castle Close.

The formal business was concluded by inviting members to participate in an “open forum” discussion. This raised issued of speeding around the back lane at Swanpool, a swimming pool being built without planning permission and the recently announced ten per cent increase in Falmouth Town Council’s portion of next year’s council tax charge.

On closing the formal part of the meeting, the chairman introduced guest speakers from ShelterBox, Mr Joe Cannon from the response tem and assistant Phil Duloy. They gave a very interesting and well received talk on the origins of ShelterBox and the recent extensive involvement in the Haiti earthquake disaster. An actual ShelterBox was on display together with its contents. Mr Cannon highlighted a number of the items, such as water filters, wind-up radio, thermal blankets, etc and explained how many of these had been specially designed for ShelterBox with feedback from their direct experience with many emergencies worldwide.

The chairman thanked ShelterBox for their inspirational talk and wished them well with the work in Haiti. A collection raised in the region of £250 for the Helston based charity.

The proceedings closed at 4.30pm.
