The annual general meeting was held in St Peter’s Church hall in Flushing on Monday, February 6.
Reports from the chairman and secretary referred to the serious illness during the year of the Musical Director, Elaine Tangye, and the efforts of George Smith, the choir’s accompanist, who rose magnificently to the challenge of directing the choir’s rehearsals and concerts, and led it in some performances which might have pleased Elaine. George was helped in this by Clive Ellison who took over from a succession of temporary accompanists to play for the choir through most of its season, and Deputy MD ‘Raffie’ Richardson, who recovered from his own illness to conduct the choir’s Christmas music. At the end of the year the choir had 59 active members, with three others who may join it soon. The year’s concerts included one in Flushing’s Methodist Church to mark the choir’s 60th anniversary; participation in the fifth Cornwall International Male Choral Festival; joint concerts with visiting Romsey MVC and with St Newlyn East Band for its centenary, and the memorial concert for Goff Richards in Truro Cathedral. Nankersey has also produced a booklet to help people remember the words of over 60 songs which may be heard when choristers gather after concerts.
Dennis Moses was elected President for 2012-13, and invested with his badge of office by the retiring President, Ron Eyre. Dennis presented a certificate to Edward James to mark his 35 years’ membership of the choir.
Officers of the choir and five members of the committee were re-elected. New members of the committee are Chris Harvey, David Lansdowne, Philip Richards, Dennis Teague, Colin Toomey and Phillip Debidin.
The choir’s first concert this year will be at 7.30pm on Saturday, March 3 at All Saints’ Church, Falmouth in aid of the Sunrise Centre and Headlands Day Centre. The choir will be joined by Stithians Ladies’ Choir and St Austell Town Band, which share Nankersey’s relief and delight in Elaine Tangye’s return to health.
The choir’s website is www.nankerseychoir.org. Practice evenings are held in St Peter’s Church Hall, Flushing on Mondays, starting at 7.30pm and ending soon after 9.30pm.
