WOMEN'S INSTITUTE: At the July meeting members were transported back to their memories of the Second World War, food shortages and rationing. The speaker, Angela Teague, gave her story "A child's view of the occupation of Holland" telling of the hardships that her mother and grandmother faced in obtaining food to feed the family and her evacuation with her sister and brother to a farm hundreds of miles away.

She also spoke about the brave work undertaken by her grandmother in working with the resistance and the years of not seeing her Dutch father whilst he was held in a concentration camp.

A vote of thanks was given by Beryl Molinghen, who said that it brought back many memories of the air raids and shortages in London.

Mrs Teague then judged the competition "A wartime recipe": 1, Jane Hatton; 2, Ann Birch; 3, Elizabeth Goddard. Another entry was for a steamed chocolate pudding which whilst very economical was almost the size of a football and would certainly feed a family!

Earlier Beryl Molinghen had reported on the trip to Country Skittles which was a great success despite her team not winning. The boat trip "Up the Creek" which had been postponed due to bad weather on July 4 was then re-arranged for July 21.

Jo-Ann Upton gave her views on the recent AGM held in Liverpool and thanked members for the chance to attend. There is to be no August meeting. Jean invited members to the president's tea party at her house on August 7. A beetle drive is to be held on September 9 in the Memorial Hall at 7.30pm and is open to anyone. The September meeting will be on September 11, Jenny Martin, "Dancing from London to Lorient".
