Women's Institute

Another month has flown by since the last meeting. Members always seem to enjoy eating and this was reflected by the first meeting of the “Three M’s”, (Mawnan Merry Munchers), formed to enjoy eating out together at least once a month.

The first event was attended by 17 members who enjoyed a delicious lunch at Trebah. On June 30 members will be having a cream tea at Glendurgan, so loosen your belts!

The June meeting welcomed Jean Head, president of Budock WI, who as delegate gave a very informative report on the AGM held at the Royal Albert Hall in June. The speakers were very entertaining, the singing uplifting and the resolution on the plight of the honey bee was passed. Mrs Head recommended anyone who had the chance to attend in the future to jump at the opportunity.

After the rest of the business meeting Jean Wattis invited two members, Jenny Ragg and Lorraine Wickens to demonstrate flower arranging in a “Floral Workshop”. The theme was to use unusual containers particularly items that were recycled and altered to display flowers. Jenny and Lorraine worked in the style of the Two Ronnies, over to her, then over to you and members were able to watch two displays being made simultaneously. Lorraine finished with an arrangement in a child’s wellington containing a cut off water bottle. The arrangements were then raffled.

On June 16, 18 members and friends played at Country Skittles, three teams of six, with a very strong competitive edge. In a game, involving going back to zero if the score of 11, 22, 33 etc is reached, one team reached 92 with no penalties (a first time occurrence) and then one member scored seven and we lost!

A new member was welcomed, making 49 in total and as next year is the 90th birthday year it is planned to expand even further in membership and possibly waistlines with all the celebrations planned.

If you like company, food, friendship and a chance to join in the bigger picture of things the WI can help to change in the world, come and join us.
