Mylor Flower Club (From Falmouth Packet)

Mylor Flower Club
10:02am Tuesday 15th February 2011 in Mylor
Members met on February 7th. Vera Vigus was welcomed, whose demonstration was “Flowers Just For You.”
Vera enjoys using a variety of foliage hand-picked mainly from her garden and colourful flowers in interesting containers. Altogether there were six arrangements.
The first design was in a lidded antique box with the flowers showing under the half-closed lid. The colour scheme was yellow and green and the yellow chrysanthemums and tulips blended well with euonymus. This was a pretty, seasonal start to the evening.
The next design was a horizontal on a painted square using beautiful pussy willow, tree heather, yellow roses and very pale green spray carnations.
Using a brass coloured, boat shaped container, Vera arranged aucuba, camellia foliage, golden fir, orange spray carnations and beautiful roses, which all blended well with the container and the result was colourful. A spectacular design was created in a white wicker umbrella stand starting with a lovely spray of garrya elliptica and including fatsia leaves and skimmia. The flowers used were strong white lilies, white roses and finally a touch of gypsophila to lighten the heavier leaves. The result was exquisite.
A very attractive figurine was produced to act as a backdrop for the next design with two placements which incorporated hand-opened pink tulips and very deep pink roses. Finally there was a topical arrangement for Valentine’s day, which naturally included red roses. This was set in front of an enormous Valentine card, which caused great amusement.
Vera was warmly thanked by Letitia Rivett-Old for an entertaining evening with wonderful arrangements.
Competition: 1, Sylvia Ollerenshaw; 2, Jean Frith.
The next meeting will be on March 7, 7.30pm in the Ord Statter Pavilion The subject “Let’s Move On” by Diane Bate. The Competition “A Host of Golden Daffodils,” space 2 ft 6in.
