Despite poor weather this summer and less than favourable conditions on the day itself Helston Fatstock Show was another success this year.

The 142nd annual show took place on Monday at Franchis Farm, by kind permission of Bob Cowell.

There was the usual mix of livestock judging alongside farm produce and domestic classes in the form of cookery, floral art and photography.

There were also classes for young farmers and children.

Honorary secretary and treasurer Margaret Eva said: “We were very pleased with the entries and the number of people there.”

A total of 18 cattle were entered for judging and Mrs Eva said organisers were particularly pleased with the entries in the produce section, considering the poor weather this summer.

The champion bullock was shown by Gail Ellis from Lelant, with Nigel and Liz Bunkum taking reserve champion this year. This year the show raised money for Little Harbour children’s hospice near St Austell.

Usually half the proceeds of the annual raffle go to charity, but this year due to the level of support given by sponsors the show has been able to give the full amount to the hospice.

This means £480 will be going to Little Harbour, with the amount including the money raised through the auction of two donations deemed too good to be given just as raffle prizes: logs from Wendron Wood Stoves and a granite bird bath from Chris Wearne.

Mrs Eva said: “We’re grateful to all our sponsors which help keep the show going and this year we were able to afford to give all the raffle to charity.”
