Red Cross call for Falmouth and Helston volunteers to help fire victims
2:15pm Wednesday 19th December 2012 in Helston
The British Red Cross is looking for volunteers from the Falmouth, Penryn and Helston area to join a new service helping the victims of house fires throughout Cornwall.
While the fire service tackles the blaze and makes sure occupants are safe, the Red Cross volunteers with the Fire and Emergency Support Service are there to provide practical help, advice and comfort, as well as a place of refuge in their specially adapted vehicle.
They can also support victims of flooding and other emergencies.
With the service now up and running from Falmouth Fire Station, the Red Cross is looking for volunteers within a 30-minute drive from Falmouth to help expand the current weekend cover to 24 hours a day, seven days a week next year.
This means anyone living in Falmouth, Penryn, Helston or Truro would be suitable to sign up.
Rich Williams, coordinator for the support service, said: “The Red Cross is really excited about bringing this service to Cornwall as it gives us an opportunity to help people in need of support during traumatic times.
“Few people realise how much damage even a small fire can create. Smoke penetrates everywhere. All carpets, soft furniture and clothing will be affected and invariably have to be replaced. Often people are very upset and our volunteers are able to support people in these situations with sensitivity.”
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can contact Rich Williams on 01872 267960 or email email@example.com
