Mullion’s Boxing Day Dip had to be cancelled this year due to dangerous seas.

Organised by the Mullion Surf Life Saving Club, the event usually sees dozens of hardy swimmers taking to the cold December sea to raise money for charity.

However, club treasurer Glynis Sadler said that this year it would have been unsafe to continue with the swim.

Mrs Sadler, whose husband Ian looks after the equipment as gear steward, said: “The guys went down to check it out and deemed it unsafe for the amount of people on the beach and going in the sea. We weren’t prepared to take the risk.”

A similar swim taking place in Sidmouth that same day led to some swimmers covered in cuts and bruises having to be helped out the sea by lifeboat crews, after they were flung against rocks.
