Cornish comedian Johnny Cowling did a ‘proper job’ when he raised more than £1,000 for Halwin Pre-school.

Mr Cowling, who is famed for his local humour, whipped his audience into a frenzy of laughter at the event held at Wendron Football/Cricket Club. The evening was organised by Anita Street, mother of Halwin Primary School pupils Toby and Zach, helped by Sarah Board who also has children at Halwin.

Anita sold over 100 tickets and a good belly laugh was had by all. As usual Johnny brought his Cornish jokes and stories, meaning everyone headed home with a big smile on their faces. Auction prizes included a hamper donated by Penny Eddy, Clarins skin care products, a Plymouth Argyle football signed club football shirt and tuition from Annie Sibert of My Fish Kitchen. The impressive donations meant that Mr Cowling was able to play the successful bidders off against each other in some healthy competition, to ensure even more money was raised. Julie Thomson, pre-school manager, said: “I’ve really had a great time tonight. It's so nice to see local people having such fun whilst raising funds for our school.”

She added that Anita and Sarah were “a credit” to the school and pre-school, adding: “What a successful night. I’d also like to thank everyone who donated items for the raffle and everyone for coming along.”

Another comedy evening will be arranged for this year, with tickets sold on a first come first serve basis.
