Celebration of reading in Helston for National Libraries Day

A celebration of books and reading will be taking place in Falmouth and Helston’s libraries this Saturday (February 9) as part of a national day of festivities.

It is the second year that National Libraries Day is taking place, recognising the benefits of libraries, and the people who work in them.

To mark the occasion libraries across Cornwall are putting on a range of special events, from story time to quizzes and the chance to help create a giant book.

Reader services officer Merryn Kent said: “National Libraries Day is a way of celebrating what libraries do, but it is also an opportunity for libraries to tell people what they have to offer. There really is something for everybody. Whether you are a book lover who wants a good read free of charge, whether you need to use a computer or you want to learn a new language you can do it all through your local library.”

She added that with so much now online, even people unable to get to a library regularly could benefit from library membership.

“People don’t realise how much they can access from their own home,” she said.
