As the Disney song goes, it’s better down where it’s wetter, under the sea – and so it proved for Porthleven Primary School.

The school splashed out for its latest fundraising event, the Under The Sea Ball. This saw the hall transformed into the depths of the bottom of the ocean, with “seaweed” hanging from the ceiling and a “coral reef” to one side.

Headteacher Duncan Ratcliffe dressed as a pirate, and Leigh Yates – whose business Sparkle Parties and Events part organised the event – dressed as Ursula the Sea Witch from the Little Mermaid.

However, it was reception class teacher Andrea Lewis who stole the show dressed only in a swimming costume, towel, flip flops and armbands.

Leigh, who is also vice-chairman of the parent teacher association, said: “Just to see her doing that was fantastic.”

She added of the event: “It was amazing. It was just nice to see the kids and the teachers let their hair down.”

The ball was sponsored by Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

“A big thank you to our PTA, the parents, the teachers and the kids,” added Leigh. “The kids were making such a fantastic effort with their costumes. We had mermaids, swimmers and pirates. It was such a really fantastic night. The atmosphere was amazing.”

The ball raised in the region of £300 towards ongoing fundraising for IT equipment and pupil treats.
