A player in a match against Helston AFC has been described as “lucky to be here” after puncturing his intestine on the pitch.

The injury occurred as Helston's first team were playing Holsworthy at their home ground of Kellaway Parc.

Holdsworthy captain John O'Donoghue is understood to have collided with a teammate.

He is reported to have received help from a member of the Helston side, who is with the search and rescue squadron at RNAS Culdrose, before being taken to Truro's Royal Cornwall Hospital for a five-hour operation.

Mr O'Donoghue was described by Holsworthy chairman Barry Parish as “lucky to be here”, while Helston AFC wished him a “speedy recovery” via Twitter.

Helston ended up winning the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one west game 11-0.
