Helston Railway's charity 'Santa shave'

Helston heritage railway’s very own “Father Christmas” was given a sponsored shave this week to help raise cash for a children’s charity and the railway’s upkeep.

Volunteer Len Moyle, who plays the part of Santa in the railway society’s festive Santa Specials, was de-bearded last Friday at a special shearing ceremony in Crowntown’s Crown Inn.

Barbara Barnes, from the Helston Railway Preservation Society, said: “A little apprehension was in the air as various garden shears and other implements were seen entering the pub, but we didn’t worry Len – after all we needed to make sure he stayed put.

“We were very lucky as the pub had been full when we arrived and they were all delighted to help the cause by donating a few more pounds.

“At this stage we did try to persuade Len to go for a half shave, but this was not to be. Neither was the suggestion by Trevor that he be waxed instead – far too painful!”

Len was shorn in stages, as both clippers and razors were needed to hack off all his face fuzz, but he managed to stick it until the end and raised a total of £900 with his furry feat.

The money will be split between Helston Railway and the Children’s Hospice South West, which helps families with life-limiting or life threatening conditions.
