Described by visitors as “breathtaking”, “stunning” and “amazing”, the power of blooms was on show at Porthleven Methodist Church's festival of flowers.

Over four days the church was transformed into a feast for the senses by around 40 arrangers and helpers, as part of a year of celebrations to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the opening of the building.

The theme was “Let There Be Light” and the focal display in the pulpit area depicted “Jesus, the Light of the World” – a masterpiece of design and execution by the Rev Danny and Sarah Reed.

Other impressive displays included “You are the light of the world” by Pauline Reed and Everett Tripp, which involved a clever use of mirrors to help the viewer identify with the theme of the arrangement.

Emma Hosking took the theme “Fireworks” for a vibrant modern display at the front of the building, while “Daybreak” in the foyer was the handiwork of veteran arrangers Virginia Laity and Enid Smith.

Paul Benney’s arrangement “The Lord is my Light” also attracted a great deal of praise, as did Venessa Williams’ depiction of a rainbow in the gallery.

Perhaps most attention of all was paid to the overhead canopy of greenery and lights, put up by Jeremy Mitchell, which together with garlands and lit baskets of greenery from the men of the church created a beautiful background to the interpretive arrangements themselves.

Donations for church funds and the Cornwall Air Ambulance amounted to more than £1,000.

A church spokesperson told the Packet: “The members of the church would like to express their grateful thanks to all those flower arrangers and other friends and supporters who took part in this year’s festival, giving so many hours of their time to make the event the success it undoubtedly was.”
