Crowds enjoy display at Coverack Lifeboat Day and regatta: PICTURES

Spectators were treated to displays by the RNAS Culdrose air sea helicopter and the RNLI boat from Falmouth as well as lots of stalls and entertainment on the Saturday Lifeboat Day Ian Bailey, chairman of Coverack RNLI, said: “The event was very successful, the weather was exceptional and the display from Culdrose and Falmouth RNLI was breathtaking as ever.”

Treasurer Robert Foxton also said how delighted the group was with the turnout, saying: “There were a lot of people and children there; everybody was in a great humour all day long.”

The fundraiser boasted five commercial stalls this year, which is the most that the event has ever seen.

Mr Foxton added: “Each year they grow and grow, we certainly almost had nothing left by the end of the day.”

Following Saturday’s Lifeboat Day activities, visitors were also invited to take part in the RNLI Regatta on Sunday.

It was the first time that the events have ever been back to back and taken place on the same weekend.

Mr Bailey said the regatta team was “delighted and exceptionally happy with the turnout”, as they had feared the day would be much quieter with people only having so much money to donate in the space of one weekend, and the forecast being stormy.

He added: “We managed to call it right when we decided to go ahead with the regatta, despite the forecast, and it turned out to be a great weekend had by all.”

The only event to be cancelled was the sailing race.

The committee congratulated the younger contestants in all events, who were described as “so enthusiastic” entering as many events as they can. Many were seen in the village later wearing their medals and the souvenir caps given to every contestant as a memento of the day. A chocolate bar was also given to keep energy levels up.

The committee thanked all the participants, spectators and local businesses that supported with raffle prizes and the many vice presidents who contributed annually to funds.

“Thank you to Sarah Lyne, Sue Lea, Norma Hammill, Joanne and Katie Barry who supervised the barbecue and Maggie and John Gaunt, Trish and David Bruce with Tracey and Chris Lewis who worked hard selling raffle tickets. “Thank you to Glen Carey and Tom Salmon who do an excellent and amusing commentary from the Fisherman’s Rest with the PA system ably organised by Sput Sturmy.

“Thank you to Robin Hobson and Chris Prior from Coverack Windsurfing School who supply and manage the safety aspects, paddle boats and other equipment to make the day so successful. Thanks also to the recorders, handicappers, starters and judges who ensure the success of this fun annual event in Coverack,” they added.

The two events are held in support of the RNLI and the charity is hoping for a record breaking amount to top the £3,800 that was raised last year.
