Saturday saw the 13th Carleen and District Village Show taking place in the village hall.

It was opened by Mary Seargeant, who grew up in Godolphin and was a member of the committee when the show started in 2002.

She said how delighted she was to see it had gone from strength to strength over the years.

Entries were up by 100, compared with 2013, at 590, which was put down, in part, to this summer’s good weather for flowers and vegetables. There was a wide variation of crafts in the handicrafts section from the smallest handmade jewellery to a guitar. The best exhibit in this section was a very detailed hand-knitted chess set. The cups were presented by chairman of Breage parish council, Rosie Wyvern-Batt.

Viv Treloar, chairman of the show committee, thanked all who worked so hard to set up and run the show, the exhibitors who made the show and the ladies who supplied the teas. However, she added: “The big disappointment was the very poor number of children who entered. Those who do enter enjoy the competition and collecting their prizes at the end. They must be encouraged.

“They are the future for traditional village activities.”

Some of those who have entered as children are now having a go at the adult classes. One of these was Connor Sharkey, aged 14, who for the second year won first prize in the men only fruit cakes class.
