Two months after her house was devastated by fire a Helston mother is finally seeing her home rise from the ashes.

It is all thanks to a huge team of volunteers, who have rallied by Suzy Thalha of Hellis Wartha following the blaze back in August.

She and her two children, eight-year-old Ellie-Mai and 14-year-old Jessica, were made temporarily homeless after the flames gutted the ground floor.

The fire, which originated in the tumble drier in the garage, when towels set alight, quickly spread to the kitchen, which was entirely decimated, and into the living room where fixtures and fittings were destroyed, including the sofa and television.

Suzy, who works for Sainsbury’s in Helston, had no house insurance and the council had been just weeks away from buying her house from her, through a mortgage rescue scheme.

Unsure who to turn to, her friends set up a Facebook campaign that quickly grew beyond all expectations.

As a result, builders, electricians and other tradesmen – even personnel from RNAS Culdrose – have been giving their time and expertise for free to help refit the house.

On Saturday the Packet returned to the house, where it was a different story.

Plaster board was being put up internally, courtesy of RGB Builders, and insulation has been given by Travis Perkins, while the roof was also being completed and the windows fitted.

These have been supplied by Camel Glass at a reduced rate and fitted by a local tradesman.

Helston architect Scott Hesketh has been project managing the rebuild and organised the roof.

Suzy said: “A great big thank you to everyone that’s still helping and donating, and giving their spare time to help out.”
