Space is famously referred to as “the final frontier” – so surely it makes perfect sense to locate the UK’s first gateway to the stars at its very own “frontier”, the most southerly point?

Certainly that is one website creator’s view, who has put together what one assumes is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek holding page promoting “Cornwall Space Port” at Lizard Point.

With the tagline “Kernow to the moon – gateway to the stars” it goes onto to say: “As many of you will be well aware, Kernow is in dire need of a Space Port.

“It’s vital we secure the funding needed to progress further, especially if Cornwall is going to become independent from the rest of the UK.”

The website goes on to illustrate this point with an animation of a spaceman climbing into the Lizard Lighthouse, which has been transformed into a rocket complete with firing jets.

Sitting on the ground is a dog, wearing a space helmet, complete with the words “Proposed launch pad - Lizard Point. Dogs not allowed April to September.”

Methinks someone is jesting.

It even goes onto claim, “Update, latest news – The National Trust has proposed that its Lizard Point |is used as a possible location for launching into outer space.”

Really?

A quick call to the Alastair Cameron, property manager at the Trust, sadly suggests otherwise.

A slightly mystified Mr Cameron laughed: “It’s an interesting idea. It may not be the best place to reach the stars from, but Lizard Point is a great place to see them!”

Of course all this stems from a more serious story that broke last month, when the government announced plans to invest in a space port, to establish the UK as a leader in the rapidly-expanding space market.

It should be pointed out that this would not be a UK version of NASA, but rather a base for “space tourism.”

While Newquay Airport is the more likely contender for any offering Cornwall might have, the Lizard certainly has the open space on which to build the necessary length runway.

Although quite whether the native choughs would be quite so chuffed is another matter.
