A group of crafty women in Gweek had remembrance commemorations all knitted up this year.

Members of the Gweek Craft Group have been busy over the last few weeks, creating an estimated 200 knitted poppies in time for Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

The group, which meets at the Gweek Mission Church, put on display for Remembrance Sunday.

Amongst the traditional red poppies were a number of purple versions, which are used to commemorate the animals that have lost their lives during war.

Maxine Goldsworthy, from the craft group, said: “They have all been made by members of the group. We have been making them at home and when we met.”

The project grew from an idea of member Jackie Spoor. The poppies will be kept for use in future years.

However, the group does not plan to stop there. Members intend to carry on knitting the poppies, with the intention of filling the church aisle during the Remembrance Service in 2018, the centenary year of the end of World War One.

Outside, members have also been hanging tags containing the names of the fallen from Gweek, on one of the village trees, to create a memorial tree.
