Andrew George may be preparing to stare down the barrel of a gun come election time, but for now he was content to just visit a shooting range.

The West Cornwall MP took time out of his busy schedule to meet with the Cornwall Blind Association shooting club in Helston, at its range in Parc an Harvey.

Part of Helston Shooting Club, the section has around ten visually impaired shooters and seven helpers.

The visit came after Cornwall Blind Association organiser Bernard Lee, who helps to run the Helston sessions, got in contact with all the Cornish MPs, via his wife, to inform them that Swarovski, which is known for its crystals but also makes sights for the guns the club uses, planned to stop making them.

He mentioned to Mr George that if he had an afternoon free then he would be welcome to visit the visually impaired shooters – and the MP was there like a shot.

Mr Lee said: “He popped in and spent an hour with us. I think he thoroughly enjoyed it.”

It was also a chance to take a trip down memory lane, as one of shooters was an old school friend of Mr George’s.

During his visit Mr George was able to experience the special equipment used by the shooters. Instead of traditional sights the shooters wear headphones and listen to a varying pitched sound – the closer to the target the shooter is, the higher the pitch.

The club, which meets between 1.30pm and 3.30pm every Wednesday, is always looking for new volunteers and visually impaired shooters. For more information contact Bernard Lee on 01209 715986.
