Helston Fatstock Show saw the highest number of entries for a number of years on Monday.

This included 22 cattle being shown – more than last year – and a huge range of cookery and crafts on display in the domestic tent.

The show’s honorary secretary and treasurer, Margaret Eva, said: “It was a fantastic show, with a very good number of entries, in all departments. There was also a very good attendance, even though the weather wasn’t very kind.”

She added that the judges were impressed by the standards on display, describing it as a “very good competition all round.”

Champion bullock on the day was a Limousin cross shown by Nigel and Elizabeth Bunkum from Liskeard, and reserve champion was a Limousin from Chris Eddy at St Erth.

The show, held again at Franchis Farm by kind permission of Bob Cowell, featured the usual cattle and sheep, produce, floral art, home produce and photography, with classes for children and young farmers’ club members.

A class from Pencoys Primary School at Four Lanes visited the event for the first time.

This year marked the 144th year of the show, with Martin Matthews the 2014 president.

He chose Cancer Funding for Cornwall as the charity to be supported through a raffle and auction of donated items. A total of £611 was raised.

Mrs Eva said: “As always, a very big thank you to Mr Bob Cowell for his venue, which makes the show possible. And we’re very lucky to have a very dedicated, loyal committee to all muck in and help.” She also thanked all the local businesses that sponsored the show, adding: “That enables us to give this donation to charity.”
