There were record takings for the second year at Mawgan Church Christmas bazaar.

Arriving at Mawgan Recreation Hall in his now customary transport of pony and trap, Santa found the Christmas bazaar in full swing on Saturday.

The transport was supplied and driven by Graham Caines and Santa’s assistant elf welcomed him with a mince pie.

Organisers remarked on how there appeared to be “more people than ever”, with lots of children, all enjoying the many guessing and skill games.

There were homemade cakes, |colourful Christmas table arrangements, wreaths, bric-a-brac and many other goodies for sale.

Raffles and tombolas had people returning until all the prizes went and Nellie Sobey, Jean and Tessa Cooke kept everyone refreshed with tea and cakes.

There was keen competition in the games room where the children triumphed over the adults. Fin Kevern produced the highest score in the marble game, Charlotte Lyford was the hoopla champion, and the bagatelle was won by Alex Rand. Guessing the weight of the Christmas cake, and the number of sweets and nuggets, also proved popular.

The final takings exceeded £1,000, which was another record for this event.

The church has thanked everyone who made and donated goods and gave so freely of their time, and all who came and spent their money to make the day so successful.

Particular thanks went to the businesses in both Mawgan and Helston who gave generous vouchers and produce for prizes.

The money raised will be used for maintaining the church, and funds are now being raised for the roof.
